Funeral At Salem

by   John Gallas

We used to drink Poteen for half an hour

before she came downstairs in something black

and snake-danced on a mirrorful of smack

till morning lit the floor. I throw my flower,

which thumps upon her golden coffin-top,

and snaps and breaks and bleeds. And when the sun

had shown our age, she gave us, one by one,

her famous Morning Cup to drink. I drop

a bunch of dust. The dim, autumnal light

predicts the end of golden days. Her daughter

takes my hand and whispers : ‘It was Water :

the Water from her bath’, and holds me tight.

The witching lights of Salem wave and die.

I go inside while morning rots the sky.
