Elm Street Lovers

by   Simon French

Vermont in the throes

of a passion of red leaves,

yielded up on the fall’s chill breath.

They swish around white picket fences

and the community readies itself

for the trick or treat of kid demons.

Angeline brushes her hair

into a silky obedience of flaxen waves

as fiery pumpkins leer sinisterly on the flicker

from sash windows along her street.

Boyfriend Brad, a jock of all sports

cruises over in daddy’s 50’s Cadillac;

babysitting the last thing on his mind.

Little sister sleeps as Angeline’s heart

rises into a full-moon of love and shivers

snuggled next to Brad

with cable t.v. bleeding ‘b’ movie vampires,

and microwave snacks pinging their heated fruition.

The distant Baptist bell

stutters through curdling mist

and with their first kiss enveloping her

Angeline stakes her heart

on the boy who feels a presence, hears creaks,

that drive her into his smiling arms.
